Since opening in 1977, Lobster in the Rough has welcomed generations of locals, seasonal visitors, and first-time guests looking for an authentic Maine experience. Over the years, birthdays have been celebrated, friendships have been made, and countless summer memories have started around a picnic table.

When The Rough closed for a season in 2015, many wondered if one of York's favorite gathering places had reached the end of its story. Thankfully, local ownership saw something worth preserving. When the property reopened in 2016, the goal wasn't to reinvent what people loved, but to preserve the character of a place that had become part of the community while creating new memories for the next generation.

That commitment was recognized in 2019 when Lobster in the Rough was honored as the York Region Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year, an award that reflects not only great food, but the people, community, and experiences that have always been at the heart of The Rough.

Today, The Rough continues to be a place where families return year after year, neighbors gather after work, and visitors discover a new favorite summer tradition. Whether you're stopping in for dinner, catching live music, or simply enjoying a beautiful Maine evening, our hope is that every visit feels like coming back to an old favorite.
